What You Need to Know About a Wedding Engagement

What do you know about Wedding Engagement? "Engagement" may be easily defined as "a formal agreement to get married" Isn't that a simple way of putting it? Well let me get to the meat of the matter!!

The Engagement

In ancient times it was very common for a girl's father to decide for her who she should date. But we have evolved over the years...

...yes, things have changed.

The only thing that remains is that the father somehow still gets involved in the process. By that I mean the groom will ask the father of the bride-to-be for her hand in marriage. This was seen as a way to cement the relationship between the groom-to-be and his future father-in-law.

Let me see if I can break down the "tradition" behind the wedding engagement a bit more for you!

Since history, there was a ritual involved which includes an exchange of gifts, property, or other possessions from the groom-to-be to the bride-to-be's parents. Doing this was seen as an important part of the marriage contract, it was not only ceremonial. It was seen as a contract because the bride's family was going to be losing her to another family forever and they needed to be compensated for that.

Talk about barter, and exchanging your daughter for food and worldly possessions.

Let us fast-forward to more modern times.

For some couples, they plan a year-long wedding engagement to make the necessary preparations for their wedding. This is because some of the most "popular" wedding planning specialists can be booked from anywhere between 12 and 18 months in advance. That is not as long as it sounds, trust me!

Now let us look at the Announcement!

It is only right to say that the first persons to be told of this plan are to be the bride's parents, then the groom's parents.

A very important point to take note of though: This announcement should not be made at somebody else's wedding - period!!.

Also, other family members and close friends should be informed before a formal announcement is made in the newspaper or any other publication for that matter.

If however you decide to publish your wedding engagement announcement in any publications, you should make note of the following:

Most publications prefer to announce engagements between one and six months before the actual date of the wedding
The bride or groom should make it a point of duty to contact the publisher(s) of choice in order to find the particular procedure and time.
The publishers may provide you with a basic standard application form to be completed with information including, but not limited to the following: first, middle, and last names names of parents and their hometowns schools you and your spouse attended and degrees received current job title and name of employer date, time and location of wedding
