Engagement Ring Trends For 2011

Every year engagement ring trends change. Every year we come up with completely different ideas than the previous year. We strive for better settings, cooler cuts, and unique combinations. We basically try to "outdo" what we did the year before. This year, there's no denying that we're thinking outside of the "traditional" engagement ring box.

Prince William's proposal to Kate Middleton rocked the world when he presented her with a sapphire and diamond ring. Before we knew it, everyone was asking us where they could get a replica. Suffice it to say, this year sapphire and diamond rings will be extremely popular. Many people are even putting a variation on the sapphire and going with different colored stones. Pink and canary diamonds have been popular since Jennifer Lopez received her huge canary diamond engagement ring from Ben Affleck, and they haven't dropped in demand yet. We're also seeing a high demand for cheaper colored stones like citrine, tanzanite, emeralds and rubies. As long as we infuse color, we're happy.

Speaking of color, the demand for "green" engagement rings is certainly on the rise. By "green", we mean politically correct and environmentally conscious rings. Recycled gold settings and conflict-free diamonds are making a splash this year. Some people are completely evading diamonds altogether, and going with different gemstones (i.e. birthstones) for their rings.

Vintage rings are another trend this year. Extremely intricate Victorian and Edwardian inspired rings with a lot of floral detail have been selling like hot cakes. On the opposite end of the spectrum, some people are opting for a raised and simple setting, making the center diamond the focus. Halo settings have also been trending upward. Halo settings are settings in which smaller diamonds surround the center diamond and form a "halo" around it. What all these settings have in common, however, in terms of popularity, is the fact that they're usually white on white rings. This means that a white metal (i.e. white gold, platinum, or titanium) is selected and coupled with white diamonds.

If you're in the market for an engagement ring this year, remember to analyze what the current trends are. While many of this year's current trends are certainly unique, it appears the underlying "trend" this year is to be artistic and think outside the box. Creativity and unique designs are taking center stage, and traditional rings seem to be falling by the wayside. This is great news for consumers because they finally have the liberty to purchase a ring that makes sense for either their partner's or their own unique sense of style and personalities.
