While most don't think about it day to day, a disaster situation or emergency can happen at any time. It's hard to know when these will happen to you personally, but it is a possibility at any time. The smart thing to do is to prepare for them right now just in case something does happen.
Most people do not need to have completely self-sufficient homes to be properly prepared for common disaster type situations. You can live in the city and still be prepared for most events. These are most likely going to be things like wildfires, flooding, hurricanes, snow storms, and other weather related events.

The first thing that you need is a basic supply of food and water. It's rare for anyone in today's modern society to go without food supplies for more than a few weeks. If you have about 30 days worth of food available to you, this is more than enough for most situations. For water be sure you have some on hand as well as some way of purifying water.
Keep things at home like basic camping supplies, blankets, a few ways of starting fire, extra medicine, and other things that you might need along the way.
One thing that is very important for these types of situations is to be in shape. This is not just a physical fitness but emotional fitness as well. Get into good shape and learn how to deal with stress properly because these situations will definitely push you.
Be sure that your family knows what to do if separated when a disaster happens. Where will you meet your kids? Where can you pick them up? How will everyone get back together? Answer these questions for you and your family.
Be sure that you also have a way of getting out of the city if need be. Be sure to have more than one route out as there might be quite a bit of traffic if everyone is leaving the area.
