Book Review: Drew in Blue

Drew in Blue, by J. M. Kelley, 2010, Lazy Day Publishing, ebook. 364 pages.

Drew in Blue is a love story; not the kind where the main characters see each other across a crowded room and are strangely drawn towards each other, but one that feels real and true. Drew and Kris have been best friends for years. How many people have found themselves in that situation? You know what they say. It's right under your nose. If it had been a snake, it would have bitten you.

Well, Drew and Kris are best friends. When Drew's casual encounter drops a baby off at his house and hightails it for parts unknown, Drew is suddenly faced with instant fatherhood. Kris guides him through his uncertainty, getting him to man up and care for his son.

As the story unwinds, we find ourselves rooting for Drew and Kris. Can't they see that they really love each other? How can they be so blind? I really loved that this book shows true love as something steady and dependable, not sparkling with excitement. It is that very dependability that allows two people to open up to each other and find each other endlessly fascinating.

Drew is far from perfect, and he knows it. I think that is what I love about him the most. Both he and Kris felt real; like they were friends that I'd known for a long time. I wanted him to be a good father to Nick. I wanted him to realize what was there right under his nose.

The author did a fantastic job of showing how Drew slowly learned to be a father. She didn't hold anything back, from the sleepless frustration of an ear infection to the endearing belly laughs that make parents feel all mushy towards their babies.

If you're looking for comfortable read that you won't be able to put down, check out Drew in Blue. Ms. Kelley has created a real world here that is entrancing in its ordinariness. I highly recommend Drew in Blue.
